Peanuts and Case Managers
BY MICHELLE BRUSIO, MSN, RN, CCM
One of my favorite guilty pleasures is collecting and enjoying Charles Schulz’s Peanuts. From the earliest comic strips to the beloved television specials and treasured collectibles, some classics truly stand the test of time. Each character was inspired by someone in Schulz’s life, and together the Peanuts gang reminds us of the importance of friendship, resilience, and life’s simple lessons. Through their adventures and unforgettable storytelling—accompanied by that iconic music—they continue to bring smiles to generations of readers and viewers.
As I reflect on the people I have met, befriended, and learned from through CMSA, I realize how much our case management community resembles the Peanuts gang. Like Charles Schulz, we bring creativity, compassion, and dedication to our work. We share stories that connect us, teach us, inspire us, and preserve the traditions we have built over the past 35 years. In many ways, each of us is a unique character in CMSA’s ongoing story, contributing to its history, research, and evidence-based practice.
Like the Peanuts characters, we value and accept people for who they are. We champion inclusion, even if some of us leave a trail of dust behind or carry our own version of Linus’s security blanket. We stand up for what we believe in, sometimes with a little Lucy-like determination, while remaining committed to our Standards of Practice. One of my favorite stories about Charles Schulz is that he refused to remove Franklin, the first Black character in Peanuts, despite concerns from publishers that some newspapers might reject the strip. Schulz stood firm—and Franklin remained. It’s a reminder that doing the right thing is often worth defending.
Case managers also embody the kindness, perseverance, and resilience found throughout the Peanuts stories. There are days when life feels like Lucy pulling away the football just as we’re about to kick it, or we receive “a rock” instead of the reward we hoped for. Yet we also know the comfort of having faithful friends who will wait with us in the pumpkin patch, share popcorn and jellybeans, or simply listen when we’ve spent the day battling our own Red Baron. Just as importantly, we celebrate one another’s successes—from outstanding posters and presentations to the recognition of the Fellows of 2026 and the congratulations of this year’s Case Manager of the Year, the little red-headed girl.
When was the last time you watched a favorite classic that brought you joy or listened to music that instantly lifted your spirits? For me, Peanuts remains a timeless tradition that I look forward to sharing with my family every holiday season, while adding new treasures to my collection throughout the year.
Today, I see the members of CMSA as characters in another timeless story—one defined by compassion, advocacy, resilience, and service. Like Peanuts, it is a story worth celebrating today and preserving for generations to come.
