As we begin National Case Management Week (October 13-19, 2024), it’s time to honor and celebrate the heroes of healthcare—our dedicated case managers. This annual celebration has grown into a powerful movement that shines a spotlight on the vital role case managers play in delivering patient-centered care and improving health outcomes.
The History Behind the Celebration
National Case Management Week traces its roots back to 1998, when the Case Management Society of America (CMSA) set out to elevate the industry. The inaugural celebration was aligned with the CMSA’s founding anniversary on October 10, 1990. What started as a small observance quickly gained momentum, inspiring other organizations to join in. To foster unity and amplify the impact, CMSA worked collaboratively with these organizations, leading to the unified celebration we now observe every second full week of October.
Why This Week Matters
National Case Management Week is more than just a celebration—it’s a recognition of the tireless efforts and innovative strategies that case managers bring to healthcare. While CMSA appreciates these professionals year-round, this designated week allows us to collectively honor their contributions in all settings and from all disciplines. It’s also a prime opportunity to educate all invested parties—payers, providers, regulators, and consumers—about the invaluable role case managers play in enhancing the quality and efficiency of healthcare delivery.
How to Get Involved
Whether you’re a case manager, healthcare provider, employer or community member, there are countless ways to join the celebration:
- For Case Managers: Engage with your local CMSA Chapter and the National office for educational events and activities. Spread the word about CM Week through social media and participate in events tailored to your profession.
- For CMSA Chapters: Plan local celebration events and share activities on social media and with CMSA National. Make sure to encourage your mayor, county executive or governor to issue a local proclamation for National Case Management Week.
- For Employers: Host appreciation events, feature case managers in your internal communications, and encourage participation in CM Week activities.
- For Healthcare Providers: Acknowledge the critical role of case managers in your team and promote effective communication strategies to enhance patient care.
