A Message From the 2026 CMSA President

As case managers, we have the privilege and responsibility of serving individuals, families, caregivers, and communities during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives. Despite the ever-changing healthcare landscape and the challenges that continue to shape our profession, our commitment remains unwavering: to improve the health and well-being of those we serve through compassionate, coordinated, and patient-centered care.

At the Case Management Society of America (CMSA), our mission is rooted in advancing the practice of case management and supporting the professionals who make a difference every day. Through leadership, advocacy, education, and collaboration, we remain dedicated to improving patient outcomes, enhancing care experiences, reducing healthcare costs, and supporting the goals of value-based care.

As we reflect on the success of the 2026 CMSA Annual Conference & Expo, I am filled with gratitude for the remarkable volunteers, committees, chapter leaders, and members whose dedication continues to strengthen our organization and advance our profession. The conference provided an opportunity to celebrate excellence and recognize the extraordinary contributions of our colleagues.

Among the highlights was the induction of a distinguished group of new Fellows into the prestigious Fellow of Case Management (FCM) designation, honoring individuals whose leadership and service have left a lasting impact on the profession. We also celebrated Lifetime Achievement Award recipient Kat Moreo and Case Manager of the Year, Dr. Colleen Morley, whose accomplishments exemplify the highest standards of excellence in case management.

Additional recognition was given to first-time conference attendees, CMSA Chapter Presidents, and newly appointed Council of Chapter Presidents (CPC) Representative Maryann Ott. We also witnessed the symbolic passing of the gavel from President Janet Coulter, whose leadership has guided our organization with vision and dedication. As I assume the role of CMSA President, I do so with deep appreciation for the leaders who have come before me and with great optimism for the future of our profession.

The conference also celebrated our chapter award recipients and CMSA Foundation research award winners for 2026. Their achievements remind us that innovation, scholarship, and collaboration are essential to advancing the science and practice of case management. It is through the collective commitment of our members that CMSA continues to build tomorrow through case management excellence.

That commitment to excellence has never been more important. As health-care rapidly evolves, case managers are uniquely positioned to shape the future of care by leading innovation, advancing quality outcomes, and preserving the human connection that remains at the heart of our profession.

Emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), are reshaping healthcare delivery by enhancing care coordination, supporting clinical decision-making, identifying risks, and improving operational efficiencies. At the same time, telehealth and virtual care platforms are expanding access to services, reducing barriers to care, and creating new opportunities to engage patients across the continuum.

CMSA is committed to helping case managers navigate these advancements thoughtfully and responsibly. While technology offers tremendous promise, it must always serve as a tool that strengthens— rather than replaces—the relationships, empathy, and advocacy that are the foundation of effective case management.

Population health remains a critical focus for healthcare systems nationwide, and case managers play an indispensable role in achieving healthier outcomes for individuals and communities alike. By addressing social determinants of health, identifying care gaps, coordinating services across settings, and promoting preventive interventions, case managers help improve outcomes while reducing disparities and unnecessary utilization. Through collaboration, community partnerships, and data-informed strategies, we can continue to advance health equity and create meaningful change at both the individual and population levels.

Equally important is our commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB). Every individual deserves access to high-quality, culturally responsive care that recognizes and respects their unique experiences and needs. CMSA remains steadfast in supporting case managers as advocates for vulnerable populations and champions of equitable healthcare delivery. By fostering inclusive environments where patients, families, and healthcare professionals feel valued, respected, and heard, we strengthen the quality and impact of the care we provide.

As we look ahead, workforce development will continue to be a strategic priority for our profession. The growing complexity of healthcare demands a strong, resilient, and highly skilled case management workforce. Investing in education, mentorship, leadership development, and professional advancement is essential to prepare future generations of case managers while supporting those currently serving in the field. CMSA remains committed to cultivating opportunities that empower professionals at every stage of their careers.

Our organization continues to provide leadership through the development of standards of practice, evidence-based resources, educational programming, policy advocacy, and professional networking opportunities. These efforts empower case managers to navigate increasingly complex healthcare environments while ensuring that patient-centered care remains at the forefront of every decision.

The dedication, expertise, and compassion demonstrated by case managers each day inspire me and reinforce the tremendous value our profession brings to healthcare. Whether advocating for a patient, coordinating services across the continuum, addressing barriers to care, or supporting families through difficult transitions, case managers make a profound difference in the lives of those they serve.

It is both an honor and a privilege to serve as your CMSA President. Together, we have an extraordinary opportunity to shape the future of healthcare by embracing innovation, advancing population health, championing equity, strengthening our workforce, and elevating the practice of case management.
